We'll Understand It Better Bye And Bye (1925) / Bye and Bye When The Morning Comes (1927) / By and By (1950)

"We'll Understand It Better Bye And Bye" is a gospelsong written in 1905 by Rev. Charles Albert Tindley, while he was pastor of the Bainbridge Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.

Probably first published in "Soul Echoes: A Collection of Songs for Religious Meetings No. 2"

It was song # 30 in that collection.

A version of Tindley's hymn was collected in Tennessee and appears in the 1914 Journal of American Folk-Lore: page #258 song #5

The first recorded version of this gospelsong seems to be:

The "Bye and Bye" tag, used at the end of a chorus or line, is frequent in the African-American tradition. The old hymn, "Farther Along" uses the familiar tag, "We'll understand it all bye and bye."

3 opmerkingen:

  1. We'll understand it better bye and bye was recorded in 1924 by Rorer Posey & The North Carolina Ramblers (Edison matrix N 455) but this version was not released.

  2. Hello Colonel.

I checked my Edison-lists. And I can't find a 1924 recording by Rorer Posey & The North Carolina Ramblers.

But on September 24, 1928 Posey Rorer & The North Carolina Ramblers did record 2 versions of "We'll understand it better bye and bye".
One had matrixnumber 18752 and the other N-455 (the one you mentioned). Both were unissued at the time.

I also checked my Country-bible by Tony Russell. In this book the above mentioned 2 recordings are also filed under the September 24, 1928 date.

I have made 2 copies, which I have added to the text above. Check it out.

    Jopp greets
