"Quiereme Mucho" was originally titled "Serenata Criolla" (or "Serenata Cubana")

The song was composed in 1911 by Gonzalo Roig, the lyrics were originally written by him and his partner Blanca Becerra.

Roig and Becerra had just got married in 1911 and decided to paraphrase verses by a now obscure poet and journalist, Ramón Rivera Gollury.

The song was premiered by tenor Mariano Meléndez at the Nicolás Ruiz Espadero Hall in the Hubert de Blanck Conservatory of Havana under the title "Serenata cubana" (Cuban Serenade) in 1911.

Because this version did not gain much success, the song was not published

In 1915, the Cuban lyricist and playwright Agustín Rodríguez asked Gonzalo Roig to compose the music for a sainete called "El Servicio Militar Obligatorio", in the context of the first World War. He then created a love duet, using "Serenata Cubana" as a starting point. With additional lyrics by Agustín Rodríguez, the song evolved into the bolero "Quiéreme mucho".

Gonzalo Roig wrote the music and two prestigious Cuban authors were in charge of its lyrics. Ramon R. Gollury, under the alias of Roger de Lauria, was responsible for the first part; whereas Agustin Rodriguez, the popular comedian of the "Marti Theater", was in charge of the second.

So "Quiereme Mucho" was premiered in the Havana Theater "Alhambra", as part of the play "El Servicio Militar Obligatorio", in 1915.
The duo that performed it in the play were Blanca Becerra and Rafael Llorens.

Maybe Mariano Melendez was the first performer of the song, but the first recording by Mariano Melendez I could find is from end 1924 early 1925, released on Pathe 06637, with an orchestra directed by Jaime Pratts, who also played piano

In 1932 Carol Raven wrote English lyrics for "Quiereme Mucho" and it was re-titled "Love Me Tonight" (NOT to be confused with the Rodgers/Hart song which was published 2 months later)

Also in 1932 Jack Sherr wrote English lyrics for "Quiereme Mucho" and this was re-titled "Yours".
But in the coming years it met with little succes despite the 1939 Xavier Cugat recording with Dinah Shore as vocalist.
