This is a love ballad supposedly written in 1860 by Prince William Pitt Leleiōhoku (1854-1877), the brother of Queen Liliuokalani who was the composer of "Aloha Oe")

Under the original title, the song was recorded around June 1911 by the Crowel Glee Club, and released by Columbia Records (Columbia Y29) (coupled with "Akahi Hoi" by Mr. Tullet & Mr. Kaiwi)

Johnny Noble, leader of the Moana Hotel band in Waikiki Beach, managed to copyright this song in '29 under new title "Ta-hu-wa-hu-wai" without substantial alterations, apart for some jazz accents in the arrangement.

In 1958 Dutch artists Johnny Kraaykamp en Rijk de Gooyer used the Ta-Hu-Wa chant at the beginning and at the end of their song "Het Goudgele Strand van Ameland".
They recorded the song in the attic studio of Pi Veriss. Both text and music were written by Pi Vèriss and Ad van der Gein (Cocktail Trio), but Rijk and Johnny also contributed and are therefore mentioned as co-composers.
Theo Ehrlicher, who played with the Kilima Hawaiians from 1946 until the end of 1958, joined on Hawaiian guitar on this version.
